about

Summary was written to be just that, a summary of Shawn's life at the time.

The song goes over money issues and how they strained social connections with friends, family issues, and girl troubles. It makes a big point of pointing out the detriments of social media, and how it has caused a decrease in literacy and the appreciation for literature, causing us to instead exchange those things by bombarding us with brief, minimal, irrelevant information, thereby dumbing us all down by slamming us with so much information, that it's mind-numbing. It also suggests that social media, coupled with public surveillance, and our society in general makes it very hard to have any secrets in the modern world, heavily implying a "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU" motif.

The lyrics also describe the attempts at trying to find peace in this seemingly chaotic world through introspection, finding escape in marijuana, and how impossibly high standards for ourselves, coupled with a lack of self confidence, can lead us down a path of neurotic self destruction.

Despite the heavy lyrical content, it's apparent that the song sounds rather happy. The song was an experiment for Shawn, who always wrote melodies that matched the mood of the lyrics. The melody serves as a counterpoint to the lyrics by trying to make light of things, almost acting like a realization the need to move on from the personal issues, and defiantly choose to live freely despite the pressures of the modern world.

lyrics

Waiting for my check so I can go out
There is nothing left in this red broke house
But I'm still in debt, to those around me
I'm not some stupid pet, this love lottery

I have a heavy head, from recovery
Literature is dead, we want a summary
And what is privacy, when the whole world's a stage?
Online piracy, brainless Information Age

Burning some incense, meditating
Reach for what makes sense so I don't go detonating
Tired of this stress, I am just a servant
Put on your sundress, I'll notice though I'm unobservant

It's alright when you're away
There's nothing I can do or say
These feelings won't come back today
But they'll return some other way

I guess nothing's perfect, but I will abide
Environment defect, born in the low tide
And everything I want, doesn't matter
All they do is haunt, and I break and shatter
